KISRA Personal Responsibility Education Program
The Making Proud Choices (MPC) curriculum gives teens the information, skills and confidence to protect themselves from unplanned pregnancy, HIV and other STIs. MPC uses DVDs, games, brainstorming, roleplaying, skill-building activities and small-group discussions. It helps adolescents understand how to make healthy decisions to protect themselves. It empowers young people to change their behaviors and lower their risks by abstaining from sex or by using latex condoms if they choose to be sexually active.
MPC was taught at St. Albans High School with a total of 193 students. These 8 modules, taught by Facilitators Chris Overstreet and Darius Booker, were completed in May 2023.
MPC was taught for Upward Bound at WVSU with a total of 26 students. These 8 modules, taught by Facilitators Chris Overstreet and Darius Booker, were completed in June 2023. Susan Graves taught Financial Literacy to the same students.
Freda Feazell and Darius Booker attended the APP Conference (Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Grantee Conference) in May 2023 which was held in Atlanta, GA. This conference taught strategies for supporting future PREP programs with youth as well as how to obtain resources to effectively meet the needs of special youth population.
We are hopeful to be in 4 more high schools by the second semester of 2024 and 2 other facilities by the first of October 2023.
